''There was evidence that father and son had returned to a normal atmosphere after a 1:30 p.m. dentist appointment for Brendan, who was out of school for a week's winter break. Neal had posted the next dental appointment on the refrigerator. Police estimate that sometime between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m., Neal and Brendan Abernathy died on the living room floor. They were face-down and tied, each killed with a single gunshot to the back of the head.'' The dental visit is interesting. When I get time I'll have a closer look at this. Edited to ask if anybody knows if this dental appointment was at the UC Davis Medical centre? I apologise if it says and I've missed it. The SCA is just a medieval recreation group that recreates the middle ages the way they should have been. Much like your civil war recreation groups. Nothing mysterious about it.

Never in a million years did I ever think I would personally know someone who had been murdered. Let alone be an unsolved cold case. I remember the morning that we got the call. It was a friend of ours from church who also knew Neal and Sue from Chevron. I didn't believe him because he was known to be a jokester. I then called another friend of ours and asked her if she had heard anything about Neal and Brendon. She said she had not until she picked up the morning paper and all I heard her say was "Oh my god oh my god oh my god"! I knew then that it was true. Like everyone else I have speculated through the years. When first investigated they tried to make it a crime of passion. But they were looking in the wrong place and the wrong person. I find it VERY disturbing that Susans now current husband has always denied answering questions. I never really liked him either. When we first met him he just kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I always wondered why he an Neal had even become friends. There's no proof. And probably never will be. But I think the prime suspect is lurking close by. Why steal an answering machine unless there's a message on it you don't want anyone to hear? And the note? Full. Body. Chills.

Its been 23 years and we still know nothing. I was 2 months pregnant. Neal, Sue and Brendon were our friends. It sickens me to know that whoever did this is STILL out there and not paying for thier crime! This case still haunts me as well. I havent had much time to research anymore, but this is one of the cases that always come to mind. I wish that LE would open up the case information at some point to qualified victim advocate groups to keep cases like this open. In my opinion, the only reason the Golden State Killer was caught was due to interest generated by the websites, and the family and friends of the victims who were brave enough to post and provide insight to the cases. I hope the same for the Abernathy's. You are welcome to post any info on this site that you would like. It is rather slow around here. Or you could go to this website and see if there is interest. I believe Almagata is still active there. earonsgsk.proboards.com/

www.csmonitor.com/1988/0727/achem.html"The report furnished by the CIA calculates that legitimate chemical imports should line up with industrial production reflected in the gross domestic product of the region. It says the real GDP rose 2 percent to 15 percent in the region and that imports for legal use should have risen 10 to 20 percent. Yet many of these countries recorded chemical import gains of 50 percent or more. ``Even if we were a 100 percent off,'' Mr. Haislip says, ``this would still be an enormous amount of chemicals for legitimate use.'' While ether is the chemical most commonly used in cocaine processing, other chemicals, such as acetone, toluene, and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), can be used as substitutes. Latin American imports of these three chemicals doubled between 1983 and '86. Toluene is used as a solvent and in the making of dynamite, saccharine, antiseptics, acids, dyes, and perfumes. Acetone and MEK are used to make paint, varnish remover, and chloroform." Attachments:

In my humble opinion, a Chevron Research Chemist would be aware of the following. And would make a very good target to acquire these substances from, or have them run an illegal lab. Something Riconosciuto would know about since he did the same thing.
Toluene
The alkylbenzenes are derivatives of benzene, in which one or more hydrogen atoms are replaced by alkyl groups of different sizes. They are a subset of the aromatic hydrocarbons. The simplest member is toluene, in which a hydrogen atom of the benzene was replaced by a methyl group.
Benzene
Benzene is an organic chemical compound with the molecular formula C6H6. The benzene molecule is composed of six carbon atoms joined in a planar ring with one hydrogen atom attached to each. As it contains only carbon and hydrogen atoms, benzene is classed as a hydrocarbon.[12]
Benzene is a natural constituent of crude oil and is one of the elementary petrochemicals. Due to the cyclic continuous pi bonds between the carbon atoms, benzene is classed as an aromatic hydrocarbon. It is sometimes abbreviated PhH. Benzene is a colorless and highly flammable liquid with a sweet smell, and is partially responsible for the aroma around petrol (gasoline) stations. It is used primarily as a precursor to the manufacture of chemicals with more complex structure, such as ethylbenzene and cumene, of which billions of kilograms are produced annually. Although a major industrial chemical, benzene finds limited use in consumer items because of its toxicity.[13]
Additives Main article: Oil additive
A large number of additives are used to impart performance characteristics to the lubricants. Modern automotive lubricants contain as many as ten additives, comprising up to 20% of the lubricant, the main families of additives are:[1]
Pour point depressants are compounds that prevent crystallization of waxes. Long chain alkylbenzenes adhere to small crystallites of wax, preventing crystal growth.

11U N D C P1. A variety of chemicals are used in the illicit manufacture ofdrugs. The United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic inNarcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances of 1988 (1988Convention) refers to “substances frequently used in the illicitmanufacture of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances”.Twenty-two such substances are listed in Tables I and II of the1988 Convention as in force on 1st May, 1998. There are a number of other cases with strange connections to UC Davis. from what I have read about the case, I got the impression that Susan was afraid of someone else more than she was of the police.
UC Davis has a history of Fed grants for secret research. The fact that Riconosciuto became involved tells me there is something that doesnt add up in the official LE case. Regardless of what he says, the fact that Riconosciuto says something about the case is enough.

www.deconsystems.com.au/dangerous-chemicals-found-in-methamphetamine/Toluene In Methamphetamine One of the other essential ingredients of the crystal methamphetamine production process is toluene, a byproduct of the crude oil refinement process. The Tolu tree also contains trace amounts of the substance naturally, but most of the refined toluene in circulation comes from oil refinement. What Is Toluene? Toluene is a very aromatic hydrocarbon solvent. It can act as an octane booster in combustion engines when combined with gasoline and can function as a substitute for benzene in some industrial applications. Health Effects Of Toluene Poisoning The human body processes toluene much the same way as alcohol, but toluene is very difficult to detect. Over time, toluene can reach toxic levels from deliberately inhaling solvents or regular environmental exposure. People who have suffered toxic toluene exposure often display various types of brain damage, toxic polyneuropathy, and persistent tremors. These tremors will progressively worsen even after an individual flushes the toluene out of his or her body and has avoided additional exposure after recovery.

I also want to know the answer and resolution to this case. After watching so much cold case files I'm confident the case will be resolved. I believe the person or persons were known to the victims and the dogs. Evidence of who contacted the family was on the the phone recorder. I'm uncomfortable with Neal's former roommate becoming husband within 2 years. When did the romance start?

It was Susan.
Read Paul Holes’ autobiography “Unmasked: My Life Solving America’s Cold Cases”. He was one of the lead investigators in the case, and the circumstantial evidence is hard to ignore.
He mentions how she left a message on her friend’s machine letting her know they couldn’t make it for dinner because her family was dead and how unbothered and chipper she had been. He mentions her saying “Oops” about her husband and son’s brain matter on the floor, and how a day after their death, she stressed to everyone who would listen that she just wanted to move on and remarry.
She was seen with a new man in the weeks and months afterward, until she introduced him at a get-together as her new boyfriend not 2 months after her family’s horrific murder.
I realize people respond to grief differently, but all of this combined with the answering machine missing and Susan’s silence—along with the note—point in one direction.
