www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-cyber-idUSKCN12L1MEHackers unleashed a complex attack on the internet through common devices like webcams and digital recorders and cut access to some of the world's best known websites on Friday, a stunning breach of global internet stability. I only caught half of the news report where I think I heard something about the New World Order claimed responsibility and they warned Russia not to mess with the US. I checked quickly but couldn't see anything about it.

They say they used webcams and digital recorders as part of the attack. I wonder how these machines were drafted into the digital army but DOS attacks only have to issue bazillions of messages to a server(s) so obviously these machines that don't typically communicate widely on the internet can be co-opted to send a message to another address that is not a media company.
Good article. Since I don't watch TV (much), was not impacted and I did not see an article on-line, this incident completely passed me by.
What would people do if the internet was down for say 6 months? We depend on it so much and it is integrated into essentially all companies at this point. We have so much food here in California locally that is not a big deal for us but other places import almost all their food and if communications an transportation were shut down due to the internet being down that would put a hitch in things.

Blackmail is the first thing that comes to my mind but what would they want in ransom?

I've only just seen this post. I don't know, maybe control of a country where they can bring back a type of government. An example would be similar maybe to what Hitler was going for in WW2. edited to add - They might need representatives in all major countries though to pull it off, say USA, UK, Australia. Maybe leaving parts of the East untouched, like North Korea.
