I've just finished Don Howell's book Sex Crimes. Don Howell is a retired sex crimes Detective from Huntington Beach, CA. Detective Howell remained in the sex crimes division for twenty seven years so he was exposed to hundreds of cases over the years.
His book is fairly short and is intended to provide a summary of how to interview sexual assault victims of various ages and communications levels but he also has sections on identifying false reports and interviewing various types of sex offenders. He does not spend a great deal of time outlining the different types of rapists, rather he refers the reader to other books that provide that information.
Here are some of the most interesting snips from the book that I found:
pg 84:
The victims ability to explain the suspect's actions, demeanor, and words used as the assault is continuing, is very helpful in discovering what his fantasy is. Most suspects will act out the same fantasy several times and then after four or five assaults, the fantasy will change somewhat.

pg 84:
Since we know that MO and fantasy are two separate things, it is quite possible that a particular suspect will come into contact with victims in a different fashion. If a rape suspect has an MO that is working for him, he will try to stay with it. But the opportunistic nature of this type of individual may result in momentary change in MO/contact. Just because a suspect breaks into a house and confronts a victim in her bed at 3:00 a.m., puts a knife to her throat and rapes her, doesn't mean that he won't also rape a hitchhiker, or that he won't rape a prostitute, or a woman working for an out-call service who comes to his house. He may have several different MO's that bring him in contact with potential victims. However, the fantasy that he acts out once he has captured the victim will quite often be the same or very similar.

pg 85:
It is not unusual for a suspect, after he has captured a victim, to appear as if he is reading from a script as the sexual assault goes on. Frequently, the suspect has fantasized the rape scenario over and over so many times in his mind that he wants it to occur specifically as he has rehearsed it. If you can elicit from the victim as to whether or not the suspect when into a phase where it appeared he was reading from an invisible script, this may be very helpful in identifying who he is later on.

pg 96:
Rape is about opportunity and fantasy. The offender will interpret the flashing of the breast, the skinny-dipping, the accepting of the ride, as invitations to assault the victim, when other people would not. The offender who breaks into the home of a stranger sees the open window or the unlocked door as the same invitation. In either case, the suspect's behavior is the same. The interview process is the same, for the victim and the offender.

Pg 137 & 138:
In regard to Sexual sadist/ritualistic type rapists.
The rapist will imagine assaulting a woman at random. This usually balances the scale and he stabilizes. If the beam tilts even more he will begin to act out on the fantasy. He may put together a rape kit, gathering the tools needed to complete a rape A mask, tape, gloves, condoms and gun or knife are common ingredients for his kit. He may prowl the freeways looking for a woman driving alone and follow her for miles, fantasizing about how easy it would be to force her off the road and rape her. This too helps balance the emotional scale.
As the beam tilts even further, he will peep and prowl, taking note of every open window and woman living alone. He may break into a home and simply stand over a woman as she sleeps. Depending on how far the beam has tilted, he may fondle her or masturbate as she sleeps. Being close to the actual assault gives the rapist the feeling of power and control he needs to balance his emotions.
When tilted far enough he will put the fantasy into play, follow the six phases of a sexual assault and complete the rape. He may need to rape several times before the beam is balances. Once done, he goes dormant, perhaps for years.

pg 138:
There's an urban legend that tells of sex offenders becoming more violent with each attack. Like a flight of stairs, the offender steps to higher levels of violence with each assault. This is not the case. If the valance beam in his head tilts suddenly and drastically, his first assault may be very violent with subsequent attacks being less violent as the scale balances.
Think more of a roller coaster effect with some rapes being very violent and others much less violent. Averaging out the roller coaster results in a slight increase of violence in the long run.

pg 139:
Think of sex offenses in time clusters. imagine your city being "quiet" for a long time. Then you get three apparently random sex crimes in one month. One is a burglary rape of an adult female in the middle of the night. Another is the burglary in which the suspect gets into bed naked, with a 6-year-old while asking if it's okay for him to be "here". The child slides out of bed and runs down the hall as the suspect stares and masturbates. The third is an indecent exposure in which the suspect jumps out of the bushes, naked, scaring two teenage girls while asking if they want to watch him masturbate.
This could be the work of three separate suspects or perhaps only one. Remember that rapist look for victims of opportunity, so the age of these three victims is meaningless. I would want to re-interview all three victims, looking for the six phases of the assault and the dialogue during the capture and assault phases. The dialogue may connect the crimes. I would also send any DNA sample from these cases to the crime lab together. Science may make the connection for you.

I would also do one more thing. I'd talk with the burglary detectives. Residential burglars are first cousins to sex offenders. Especially the hot prowl burglar. You may discover a series of residential burglaries that started at the same time as the sex crimes.

pg 184:
DNA linked this particular suspect to ten other rapes in the county. However, the MO of the other rapes was complete different. In one of the prior cases, he broke into a home around 9:00 A.M., waited until noon-time when the woman come home for lunch. He captured her at knife-point in the living room and raped her one the floor. In another case, a group of teenagers were walking on an isolated road late one night when he pulls up beside them in his car. He points a gun at the group and asks the group to pick one of the girls to accompany him. One of the girls was chosen, she gets in the car with him; he drives her about two miles away and rapes her in the front seat of the car. Yet another of the rapes involves a girl walking home in the evening hours near a freeway overpass. The suspect ran up behind her, grabbed her from behind, took her into the bushes adjacent to the on-ramp, where he raped her from behind and took one of her shoes. In yet another rape, the suspect watched two girls surfing in front of their beach house one morning. Later they were driven to school by their mother. The suspect broke into the home, presumably to wait for the two girls to return, However, the mother returns home first and after making inquires as to when the girls would return, the suspect rapes the mother. However, he has difficulty maintaining an erection and has to masturbate in order to reach ejaculation. He takes the mother's cellular telephone as he leaves. When he calls a few minutes later, he threatens her not to call the police because he is watching her.

pg 185:
Because of his arrogant and narcissistic demeanor, you can predict that he will never allow the case to go to trial. Instead, he would rather plead guilty to the charges and go to prison as opposed to letting people whom he sees as inferior to himself sit in judgement of him. Also, this keeps the true facts of the case from ever becoming public knowledge. This is his way of controlling his environment.
Re-interviewing all the victims revealed an almost identical dialogue between suspect and victim between the capture and assault phases. He was very interested in victims with limited sexual partners and performed better with inexperience girls and in a few cases he took a shoe. We never figured out why, not did we ever find the shoes.

Someone had posted that podcast link on Drifter's board and I really liked Detective Howell's demeanor and presentation of information. He would be so interesting to have lunch with. I would love to ask him a million questions.
