The magazine started in 1975, and the adds which the hitmen used were discontinued in 1986, which seems to match earons nicely.
Many of the men had military, Vietnam, and law enforcement experience.
While these people in this instance proved to be less than competent, what if ons was subcontracting out to someone more organized, and well connected?
D/S, O/M, and the Harringtons had just gone through divorce or new marriage. Janelle had the Alleged Marine Rapist who might have had connections. But Manuella's murder does not seem to fit.

Anita Spearman was bludgeoned in her bed while she slept. Braun was shot while he was leaving his home. Norwood was repeatedly stalked. His wife's ex-husband paid for the hit.
