'The unsolved murder of a ten-year-old girl in Toxteth left Liverpool so shocked 30,000 mourners lined the streets at her funeral. Schoolgirl Elizabeth Peers was gagged, raped and strangled when she ran an errand for her mum at close to midnight on October 28, 1905. Elizabeth, who lived with her five brothers, mum Elizabeth, 43, and brick-setter dad William, 47, in Wendell Street, was given sixpence to buy pork from the butchers on Lodge Lane'' ''Elizabeth’s funeral took place at St Clement’s Church, in Beaumont Street, Toxteth, and such was the outpouring of grief that some 30,000 people lined the streets to watch the procession to her burial place in Smithdown Road. The murderer – described as a tall man in his late thirties with a dark moustache – was seen running from the entry on Cullen Street at 1.30am but he was never caught. Her inquest recorded a verdict of death as “wilful murder by persons unknown”.'' www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/echo-murder-files-30000-mourners-9022603The murder of Elizabeth Peers bore hallmarks with another unsolved murder that rocked the city again three years later. On January 6, 1908, seven-year-old Madge Kirby was playing in Farnworth Street, off Kensington, with her brother. She was never seen alive again and her badly decomposed body was found in a sack seven months later. She, too, had been raped and strangled.

Taken from www.yoliverpool.com/forum/arc...p/t-13668.html'One evening around Halloween 1905, a 10-year-old girl named Elizabeth Peers was sent on an errand from her home at 64 Wendell Street (off Smithdown Road) to a butchers shop on Lodge Lane. She wore a tam-o-shanter beret, a cape, and a kilt and she never returned from the trip. On the next morning her body was found in an alleyway behind Cullen Street shed been raped and strangled. Her killer was never brought to justice and Lizzie Peers was buried in Toxteth Park Cemetery after a funeral service attended by 30,000 people. I believe the man who murdered Lizzie also assaulted and killed 7-year-old Madge Kirby of Kensington a few years later; once again the killer was never caught."
